About this Tool
The Commitment Matrix is a team exercise that helps individuals discuss the key things they need from each other in order to be successful. Each team member should be asked to consider what they need most to be successful from each member of the team. This is usually done before the meeting, as an over night assignment, or during a quiet 15 to 20 minute time slot in the off site. An item should only stay on the Matrix if the person asked for a commitment is willing to commit to the item in the matrix. Expect serious discussion and negotiation over the issues in the Matrix, discussion is usually lengthy. Once agreed to the matrix should be published and can be made into a poster to be displayed in public, if appropriate. A variation on this is to have different groups fill in the parts of the matrix, this is often done on Capital Project Team Buildings we do. The size of the group is often very large, but there maybe only 5-6 key stakeholder groups that need to discuss their unique needs.
